RED Design Group named
Telstra Business Award finalist
From retrenchment to small business success
Albert Park-based retail architecture company RED DESIGN GROUP (RED) is celebrating this week after
being named a finalist in the Telstra Victorian Business Awards.
Just five years ago the four founding directors had been retrenched when their employer went into
liquidation. With limited capital they decided to take the plunge and open their own design firm,
concentrating on retail architecture. With strong principles about building a great team, a passion
for retail design, and a determination to create a firm that would attract talented designers they
opened a small office in Albert Park.
Today they have a team of 20, have moved to larger offices (still in Albert Park), have launched their
own design magazine and are currently working on projects in Australia, New Zealand, Indonesia,
the United Kingdom and the United States.
"Looking back our specialisation in retail was the right decision to make and has won us design projects
with retailers such as Myer, Harris Scarfe and Macro Wholefoods," said RED Managing Principal, Roy Tavenor.
RED specialises in retail architecture, master planning, interior design, branding and visual merchandising
and Tavenor says that the fusion of these design disciplines is one of RED's biggest strengths.
"We have a diverse team with backgrounds in architecture, interiors, industrial design, graphics and visual
merchandising who share their ideas on each project. This creative process has helped us win work from retailers
such as Mimco, Oroton and Country Road. The whole team is thrilled that RED has been named a finalist for such a
prestigious business award."
RED is one of six finalists in the MYOB Small Business Award category for businesses with six to 20 employees.
Winners will be announced on Friday 19 September 2008 at the Sofitel Melbourne.
RED's clients include Macro Wholefoods, Myer, Harris Scarfe, Auscorp, Coles, Country Road, Oroton, Centrelink,
7-Eleven, Rogerseller, Westfield, Mimco, Delfin, Horsatack in UK and USA, Matahari department stores in Indonesia,
Harvey World Travel and Travelscene globally, and Sundan in China
