DUKE OF WELLINGTON
Billed as Melbourne’s oldest continuously operating
pub, the site has been vacant for a number of years
– awaiting a suitable tenant.
RED was invited by Paul Mathis to pitch for
an iconic pub on Flinders Street, the Duke of
Wellington. Paul's brief was to create a contemporary
destination over 3 levels whilst respecting the
heritage value of the building.
RED also created a new brand
identity for the pub – developing the traditional feel of the Duke of
Wellington name into a more contemporary concept
called The Dow.
The concept for the public bar used an overlay of
strong colour on traditional timber paneling with
decorative cornices around walls giving the
design a striking contrast of old and new.
A keg room will be open to view behind a glazed
wall.
On the first floor Paul desired a more relaxed bar
and wine room combining raw brick, natural timbers,
ceiling mirrors and rich tapestry fabrics on the
ceilings.
An upscale restaurant was planned for Level 3 with
informal communal style dining tables and private lounges.
The dining area extends out to an external terrace area featuring
greenery to add extra space and natural light to the restaurant.
The combination of the iconic location and RED's
edgy and sophisticated design was enough to win
Paul’s approval for his pitch to the property owners.
