Macro Wholefoods

RED helped Macro Wholefoods to
revolutionize the 'supermarket' concept.

"Our first challenge was to rejuvenate the 'alternative lifestyle' brand into a strong brand identity that could be rolled out nationally. Secondly, we had to design a functional, supermarket operation that did not look or feel like a stark, traditional supermarket," said Roy Tavenor, RED managing principal.

The result is a robust, modern brand that works well in different applications, and can be extended through the stores in signage, in-store communication and ticketing.

Earthy tones, recycled timber flooring and exposed beams create an intimate, warm ambience within the store while also evoking a rustic, market feel. The materials and colours are a reinterpretation of the organic and natural products being sold, and the design complements the market position of the brand.

RED designed Macro outlets: Richmond, Glen Waverley, Black Rock and Armadale in Melbourne. Crows Nest, Concord, Hornsby and Mona Vale in Sydney. Original Bondi Junction store was refurbished.

Macro Armadale

The former Armadale Hotel was stripped in order for RED to design the space from the inside out, considering sight lines, access and traffic flows. The food complex comprises a 700 square metre organic supermarket, a Macro Cafe, a Macro Naturopathy Consultation, a Macro Deli and a wellbeing centre. The store has 35 free customer car parking spaces.

Macro has 60,000 customers per week, 20,000 loyalty card members and a business reported to be worth $40 million.

International food and grocery expert IGD named Macro Wholefoods as one of its ‘Ten to Watch’ global retailers, along with online giant Amazon and Indian conglomerate Reliance.
